Active Rain Blogs – Finding What You Need – The Ultimate Search!

Here’s a “community tip” you may not be aware of regarding how to “SEARCH” Blogs.  Active Rain is a huge wealth of members, knowledge and resources!  There are so many Blog topics, ideas, instructions, do’s and don’ts, opinions and posts of information, it really can be over-whelming.  This post will show you how to maximize the “Search” options that are available to you on Active Rain.

When you click on the “SEARCH” feature from the menu bar above, you’ll have 3 options and choices to search from.  Profiles, Blogs, and Blog Comments.  When you’re searching Blogs, it ONLY searches for posts that contain the word or words somewhere within a post?  It is NOT searching “keywords” or “Tags” as you may have thought.

I tried searching for a post I had written some time ago, and I use the words “Realtor Blues.”  I never found it in the hundreds of pages returned.  That’s because it pulled up every post on Active Rain that contained the word “Realtor” and the word “Blues.”  Be careful if you are searching for phrases, or multiple words together.

Let’s say you are searching for “FSBO”, it will actually find every post that contains the word or letters FSBO in it, but if you searched “For Sale By Owner” it will pull up every post that has any portion of all four of those words.  I tried this on many searches, and had the same results every time.

What do you do if you wanted to find “Multiple Word Searches” or “Phrases” in a Blog post on Active Rain?  For example: Open Houses, Short Sales, Buyers Needed, Activerain Help etc?  You may get back a ton of posts that aren’t really what you are looking for. I know I did….

I have a “New” way for you to “Search” Active Rain, and it works by searching “Keywords” placed in the “Tags” box at the bottom of each authors post.  You’ll love this!  Try these two exercises, and see.

STEP 1: Click on the “Search” option in the menu bar at the top of this page.  Open the pull-down box and change it from “Profiles” to “Blogs”.

STEP 2: In the blank box just below it, type in the words “Realtor Blues” then click search.  You’ll see hundreds of post’s that come up.

Unfortunately, you will not find the post I’m referring to unless you’re willing to sift through hundreds of other posts.

ONLY 1 STEP:  This time, go up to the address bar in your browser, and type this:  http://activerain.com/blogs/tags/realtor blues press enter or click go, and watch what happens.

This will pull up ONLY the posts that have “Realtor Blues” in the “tags” for that post.  Now you have TWO ways that you can search what you’re looking for here on Active Rain, and they are both entirely different from each other.  If you are looking for specific posts with multiple words or phrases, and you want to narrow down your search results, then I suggest using this search process.  It’s faster and it’s a more targeted “Search!”

Just remember this URL: http://activerain.com/blogs/tags/ and then type in anything you want after tags/  This is a great new way to search Active Rain Blogs.  VERY IMPORTANT TIP: Remember that Active Rain converts all “Keywords” or “Tags” to lower case.  Always use lower case when searching with this method.

Now, try searching some of your posts this way, and see why having the right “keywords” in your “Tags” is so important.  As the membership here grows, so will the posts!  That could make it even more difficult to find what you’re looking for here.  Personally, this is the only way I like to search Active Rain Blogs anymore.

I know this is just a “SEARCH” tool, but it should save you some time and frustration!
After all, aren’t we always searching for something? LOL!  I hope it helps you with your “Searches” as much as it’s helped me!

Active Rain Settings & SEO Benefits – Very Powerful

Did you know that you are missing out on some SEO opportunities in your Active Rain Profile and Settings?   Yesterday, I did a post regarding  “How To Use Your “My Settings” Page”  I received many comments and quite a few questions.  The “My Settings” link in Active Rain clearly has some great value and benefits to you and your Blog.  There is one particular question that came up by Roswell Ga Real Estate – Nancy Rivera who runs RoswellGaRealtor.GeorgiaMLS.com about an area on the “My Settings” page.

She asked,”Brad – I have a question about #3, if you don’t mind.  I used to have something in this box but when looking at my Blog, I never saw what was written there so I removed it and added it to #2 instead.  Is this something that I would see?  If so, where?  Or is this something that Google sees?  Thanks for your time.”  MORE DETAILS>>>

What Nancy was referring to, is the “Blog Description Text” Box on your “My Settings” Link in Active Rain.  I did some research and found out that this box is used for SEO purposes.  It is also used in cases where Active Rain displays lists of blog entries, but they don’t want to include and show all of the HTML tags and widgets that people have added to their Blogs.  (VERY SMART, these folks behind the scenes at AR.)  This may very well be one of the best and yet most under utilized tool (or section) here on Active Rain!  This is HUGE!!

                                                      Active Rain and SEO

What you place in the “Blog Description Text” box is used in the “meta-description tag” on a page.  It is also used when viewing posts from multiple members of Active Rain in one place or location.  For example:  http://activerain.com/blogs, it gets utilized here.  There are probably many of you who didn’t even know that this was available or existed…I admit, I didn’t.  There are no buttons or links for access to this area of AR, you can only get here if you type in the URL.  http://activerain.com/blogs

Here’s a sample of what it looks like:

                                                      Active Rain Blog Searches

I researched hundreds of AR members tonight, and I was totally surprised at how many are not taking advantage of this.  (Like me, they probably just didn’t know)  If you use the settings in Active Rain according to their purpose, then you are more likely to get more out of your efforts and Blogs here on Active Rain.  Half the battle is just knowing this information is available and how to use it.  Well, hopefully, half your battle was just won here today!  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) never hurts anyone, at least not in my experience.  Just be sure to always focus on your content.  This could be one of the more valuable and over-looked areas on Active Rain!!

Which (randomly selected) member is getting the most out of their Active Rain Settings using the “Blog Description Text” box for SEO?

If you guessed Bill Cherry, then you’re getting all this, and you are 100% right!  This simply means we all need to review and modify what we’ve typed into that little box!  I just updated and modified mine before submitting this post.

I humbly suggest that you take full advantage of these tools that Active Rain has to offer, especially when it comes to SEO, or what I’d like to refer to as (Search Engine Opportunity).  You can only get the most out of the things in life that you know about…So when it comes to Active Rain “Settings” and “SEO” Benefits… Now You Know!  🙂

How To Use Your AR "Settings" Page

Here is some information on “How To” use your Active Rain “My Settings” page.  I have tried to make this as simple as possible, for you to get the most out of your Active Rain experience.  To access your settings page, go to your “MY HOME” link at the top of the page next to the “Logout” option.  Make sure you are logged into Active Rain before you try and modify your settings.  Next, click on the “My Settings” link on the left hand side of the page just under the “My Ads” link.  The rest is detailed below for your use.  You might want to print these instructions so you won’t have to go back and forth from this post and your “My Settings” page.

Brad Andersohn's - My Settings Instructions

Brad Andersohn's - My Settings Instructions

This is your Blog’s Title.  Be sure to give this some thought, it is the theme of your entire Blog.  This is what will appear when anyone clicks on the “Blogs” link at the Top of Active Rains main homepage.  You’ll see this title under your Blog Subscriptions.  You can use any Title you want for your Blog, I suggest make it interesting, and not just your name like “Brad’s Blog” or “My Blog”.  Your Title will attract readers and your name in it will help search engines find YOU easier.  You can always change it if you come up with a better idea later.

Your Blog Description.  This is an important area of your “My Settings Page” and it has multiple uses and values.  First, this is where you can add HTML code to your Blog.  For example, I want to have the search engines come see my Blog every 7 days to check for new and fresh content.

A. Here’s the code I added for that.
<meta NAME=”robots” CONTENT=”ALL”/><meta NAME=”revisit-after” CONTENT=”7 days”/><p>

B. I also use Google Analytics for tracking, so I added their HTML code as well.

<script src=”http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js&#8221; type=”text/javascript”></script><script type=”text/javascript”>_uacct = “UA-XXXXX2026093-1”;urchinTracker();</script>
QUICK  IMPORTANT TIP: Be sure to register your Blog or Site at Google Analytics to get your own code, the one above is a sample!  This code once added, will not make anything appear on your profile or sidebar, it is a hidden code.  All the reports and information gathered from your Blog have to be obtained from your Google/Analytics account at their website.

C. Add Meta Tags, or keywords for your Blog.  I use the following for my Blog:

<meta name=”keywords” content=”Title, Escrow, Technology, Solano, Contra Costa, Title Insurance, Agent Assist, Target Marketing, Marketing, Blogging “/>  Yours will obviously vary.

D. Lastly, this is the section where you add the HTML code for widgets, gadgets, graphics, on vacation messages etc, that you want to appear on your sidebar under your photo.  There is an instructional page on “How To Add Widgets” to your sidebar in Active Rain. If you want your graphics and widgets to be centered, be sure to use <center> code at the beginning, and use </center> at the end of the code.

Here is your Blogs Description. (Text Only – NO HTML Allowed Here)  This is where you should describe your Blog, it’s content, and it’s value to your readers, but remember this is your HUGE SEO opportunity.  You are limited to 100 words, so be direct and focused with your description and keywords.  FACT: This is the most overlooked area by new and existing AR members.  Want maximum SEO (Search Engine Optimization?  You need to read this!!! Trust Me!

Allow Non-Member comments.  Be sure you have this box checked, otherwise readers who are not members of Active Rain will be unable to comment on your post.  Unless all your posts on your Blog are (members only) I would make sure it’s checked!

Sharing your comments.  Your comments are already shared in the posts where you’ve made them.  If you want other members and readers to access “All” your comments in one easy access location, you can check this box and allow them access.  It’s really a matter of preference.

General Settings.  There is currently only “One” option under general settings.  Let others know you are on-line or not!  If you notice at the top of the page right now, you’ll see  “Members: 53,842 – 1,270 On-line Now”  in the upper right hand corner.  Out of 53,000 members, I have never seen more than 1600 members on-line at a time. If you click on the 1,270 On-line Now”  about every 5 seconds, you’ll notice that the numbers change, funny thing is, the numbers never add up.  This is very interesting.  Regardless, ONLY check this box if you want to be seen by others that you’re on-line.  Not sure why this is an option, who’d want to hide?  🙂

Your Email Settings.  This is a very important part of Active Rain and your settings page.  You have to decide how you want your email notifications to work and be managed here.  Do you want to get emailed every time someone adds you as an associate?  What about the comments you’ll receive on your Blog Posts?  What about the groups you’ve joined, the founder or administrator can do mass emails to the group, do you want to be notified?  There is even Manual Score Adjustments and Link Status notifications.  This is really up to each members discretion.  You can see, I like to be notified about anything that’s going on with my Blog or posts! 🙂

Brad Andersohn's - Members On-Line

Your Referrals.  Use the Active Rain Referral Exchange to find the best Real Estate Professional match for your clients.  You can also use the associates that you have added to your personal network here.  This is NOT for just advertising your listings. This area of Active Rain is for “REFERRALS ONLY!” Please review and follow the instructions when you click on this link.

My Comments.  This is where you can go back and track every comment you have ever made on Active Rain.  Maybe you commented on another members post, and then had a change of heart and wanted to modify or change it, but you can’t remember where that particular post is.  Use the “My Comments” link to go directly to any post you have made a comment on.  Most members don’t even know this is here.

Your Points Summary.  This is a link to your total breakdown of points earned here on Active Rain.  Every point you’ll ever receive will be found here.  It’s a great tool to see your total points on Featured Posts, comments, regular points, inviting new members points and more.  ONLY YOU can see the breakdown of individual points, keep in mind other members can see your over-all points breakdown. TIP: This page can tell a lot about you or other members.  Take a look at it, or someone else’s, you’ll see what I mean!  Are you about points or content?  Do you comment as much as you receive?  Where is your focus here on Active Rain?  This link will tell!

Your Blog Statistics.  How many comments do you receive?  How many views do you get on your post?  How many clicks are your posts getting?  It’s all here at this link.  Another great feature of the Statistics link is that you can see every post you’ve ever submitted on one page!  I like using this page to see what’s hot and what’s not!  Using the statistics page will help you determine many things about your Blog and each of the post’s you’ve written.

Your Active Rain Bookmarks. This is the link that will take you to ALL the posts you have book-marked here in Active Rain.  We all get the comments from other members that say “I’ve Book-marked Your Post!”  This is so you can refer back to them at a later time when posts get get moved down and buried into a members Blog.  The sad thing is, just like “Toy Story” I’m not sure how many of us actually go back and utilize or read the posts we’ve book-marked.  I have hundreds, and am guilty of neglecting them as I am sure you will too. 🙂

Inviting Others.  Use this link to send an invitation to someone who is NOT currently a member but that you’d like to invite.  When you use this link to invite other Real Estate Professionals, you will be credited for their membership and get points for everything they do on Active Rain.  You will get a percentage of their points on any activity they have while Blogging here.  You also will get points just for them signing up from your invitation.  You can also sent an Active Rain Invitation on your own, just be sure to use the proper link or graphic so you can get credit for inviting them.

Links To Active Rain.  This link will give you options and graphics to place on other websites and Blogs.  This allows you to promote your membership here and the network.  You can use the HTML codes here to on outside  websites and Blogs.  You will receive “Bonus” points when you add these links to other Internet pages. Here is an example of some I have added to my Outside Blog at TechKnowBabble.  I suggest doing this not for points, but to help promote our Real Estate Network Community to others!

Your Associates/Associations.  Here are all the other members that have added “YOU” as an associate.  When you add someone as an associate, don’t forget to put a comment in the box at the bottom of the page.  When someone adds you as an associate, this is privilege and an honor.  Don’t just add them without commenting, others want to read why you’ve added them, this adds credibility and helps them determine if they want to add them too.  This in my opinion is one of the best tools on Active Rain.  I use it as my Referral Network Resource and would truly refer business to those who I’ve added and who have added me.

The Final and MOST IMPORTANT TIP HERE: Don’t forget to click on the link when you’re done making your changes. Trust Me, we have all learned the hard way!! LOL!

Feel free to modify your settings now with the hopefully, a better understanding of what each of these areas and links provides.  If you have any questions on how to do ANYTHING here on Active Rain, there are hundreds of instructional posts available, or you can ask right here, I will try to answer or find the answer to your questions or comments.  I hope you’ll find the same value and relationships that I have. There’s nothing quite like being a member here at Active Rain.

Should You Have A Blog or a Website?

This is a common question that I get asked by many who are considering starting up a Blog or a Website. I really don’t know what the right answer is, but I think that Blogs are starting to have a real impact in our Industry. I also don’t think that the websites (especially corporate ones) will ever go away. The Blog is always changing with new and fresh content, topics, and ideas. Comments from others also adds new and fresh text for the search engines to find! Websites are great because many of us already have them, and consumers are used to them. Will Blogs be short lived based on the owners ability to keep coming up with good content? Are Websites more permanent? Listen to what Inman News predicts. Are there really some significant reasons as to why you’d want one or the other…or both?

What’s on a Typical Real Estate Website or Blog?

  • Listing Information
  • Area Statistics
  • Demographic Data
  • Buyer and Seller Reports
  • Why they should choose you
  • Home Valuation Research
  • Website Traffic Reports
  • Email Lead Notification
  • Leads Management
  • Featured Listings
  • Mortgage Calculators
  • Custom Property Searches
  • Buyer’s Hot-list
  • Relocation Tools
  • Lead Generating Tools
  • Local and National Free Reports
  • Local Events and Information
  • Weather Reports
  • School Information and Reviews etc.

Can’t you do all these things on both a Website or a Blog? So why have Both? In fact, isn’t it easier to do a Blog than it is to try and learn HTML so you can keep up a Website? A Blog gives the user more control over the activities, changes, ideas, upgrades and overall site management. With a well written and professional looking Blog, you can’t tell it’s not a website! Is it easier for clients to interact with you on a Blog or on your Website? Email or phone seems to be the only way to communicate with you from a Website. Hasn’t the Website become just a one-way portal of advertising? Isn’t that why Blogging is called Web 2.0? Website vs Blog!

One BIG advantage of a Blog is the cost! I know some REALTORS® that pay over $50.00+ per month for their Website, and they have no control of it. They have to contact a webmaster to make any changes, and they have to pay for any additional services and support. Even worse, sometimes their page doesn’t show up on the search engines, even when you type in their domain names. What about leads and referrals? A Blog is FREE and easy, and the support you get from networks like Active Rain and others is priceless. People helping people just because. The downside of the Blog is the time you need to invest. So is it worth the money to just pay a webmaster and have a Website? Should you just hire a writer for your Blog? Wouldn’t they be called a Blog-Master? What’s the difference?

Google loves Active Rain Blogs, maybe even more than some Real Estate Websites out there. I am not saying that Websites are a waste of time, money and effort, just wondering what advice to give someone who asks this question? What advice would you give another industry professional who might really need your help with this? In a time where money is tight, the market has shifted, and technology in our industry is changing, where do you suggest that marketing dollars are best spent? What’s your thought on having a Website or a Blog? I know some very successful REALTORS® that don’t have either, and some that have both! I wish I had a plain and simple answer for this one!! Do You?

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned?

Here's FREE Money!!  Many of my co-workers, friends, clients and fellow Active Rain members are looking for ways to diversify their income right now in this changed market.  As we are all aware, many Companies are consolidating, cutting back, laying off people, letting go of assistants, and in some cases, even closing their doors for business.  According to ML-Implode, many mortgage brokers and lenders have gone out of business.

Some of these companies affected are my clients, co-workers, friends, family and business acquaintances!   I truly have a heart for their well-being and for what's going on in our industry right now.  A lot of us have benefited from the last 5 years of a great market with increased property values, low interest rates, and major growth to our financial wealth and freedoms.  As the market adjusts to wherever it's going, I was just curious, how many of us have been saving and putting away for this very time and circumstance?  It's NEVER TOO LATE!

When I returned from the Islands to the Mainland in 2005, I discovered that ALL the money I had been saving in the Bank over the years was NOT giving the same return on my investment as Real Estate.  Yet I continued to keep my savings in accounts like Bank of America and Wells Fargo.  When I received my 1099's to do my taxes, I realized I was making such a small amount of interest on my savings.  Only .01% on my total savings amount!

Here's the honest truth of how I learned about this FREE money opportunity.

Before I returned from Hawaii, I made a promise to my oldest son that if he graduated from High School with a 4.0 GPA, I would match whatever amount he had saved up until his graduation day.  Well that day finally came.  When I asked to see his bank account statement, he showed me that he had managed to save just over $10,000!  I just about fainted! I even had to check with the bank to make sure he wasn't pulling a fast one over on me.  LOL!  The amount was confirmed!  It's true!  I had to write my son a check for $10,000 dollars on his 19th Birthday, just after his High School Graduation.

He had taken every penny ever saved since age 5, and put it into a savings account.  This is when he told me about ING.com and EmigrantDirect.com.  He told me that they payed 5.02% interest compounded monthly and that there is no penalty for withdrawals, the account only needed $1.00 to remain open, and it was Federally Insured by the Government up to $100,000 Dollars.  See why he goes to Cal Poly?  My son became my hero that day.  I immediately pulled all my savings, and put it into EmigrantDirect.com.  Now, the interest I earn helps me to pay my property taxes each year. (as sad as that may be) This is just what some of us need right now.  Here's a breakdown of what this could mean for you!

$10,000 = $50.00
per mo.  $25,000 = $150.00 per mo.  $50,000 = $250.00 per mo. $100,000 = $500.00 per mo.
All of these amounts are compounded "monthly" based on the total amount you build in the account.  It Grows!!!

I am sharing this with you not because I am working or advertising for either of these companies,
I'm just not sure how many of you know this is out there and available to you right now!  If I can help you get some of this "FREE Money", then this post will likely be worth more than any other I have ever posted on my Blog!  I know this is helping me in today's economy and market, I hope this will help you too!  Are You SavING?  Maybe DiversifyING? I'm Just CheckINGHere's FREE Money!  The truth is;  A Quarter Saved is a FREE Penny Earned!!

Disclaimer: You will be taxed on the interest paid as income. You will receive a 1099 form just like you do on a savings account.

Active Rain | A Referral Network & Business Goldmine

Are you looking to do more business in a market that has obviously changed? Do you want to get more out of Active Rain than just using the Blogging as social networking? Is Active Rain any different than the other groups or networks you’re already a part of? Are you doing business with other Active Rain REALTORS®, Lenders, and Affiliates? Could Active Rain be the Goldmine you’re looking for? These are some questions you might find yourself asking.

Click on “Your County” to see what other Active Rain members are in your area. These are the people who can relate and appreciate all that you are trying to do here. Don’t compete with each other for points or for the featured spot. Who cares if you’re featured if you’re Blogging all the time and not doing any business. Just look at the list of all the other members in your area. What a “Powerhouse Resource!” Some Counties will have many members and some will have just a few. The more, the better! You might try the County next to you, maybe they are panning for gold like you?!

What if you were to contact other members in your area, and create a Networking and Referral Business Group? There is some truth to the words in the song “I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends.”

There are some great opportunities here for us to help each other through the market right now. The Beatles’s sang it best with …”Come Together, Right Now!”

*Create a Networking and Referral group that meets in person monthly or quarterly.
*Exchange ideas and resources to help each other with some of the same and different challenges.
*Don’t see your counter-parts as competitors, but as counter-parts, they understand.
*Take the time to invest in your resources here on Active Rain, you’ll get REAL points.
*Refer business to each other and to your affiliates, that’s HUGE in this market.
*Don’t miss an opportunity to grow other business relationships because of unknown fears.
*
Make a commitment to give to other members instead of receive. It will come back to you!

I think Active Rain is one of the “BEST” referral networking goldmines there is! It’s right in front of us, but maybe the focused effort of “Blogging” is diluting some of the other true “value” here. Blogging and all that comes and goes with it, remains to be a proven asset for those who use and believe in it. However, are you using this Referral Network for all that it can offer? Is there more we could be doing to become “United and Survive?” How can you use Active Rain in your area to do what the name symbolizes? To a “Rain Maker” Active Rain means “Survival!”

I challenge you to step out of what might be your comfort zone here. Create some of the same great relationships locally that you have Nationally. Look at the associates you’ve added, and those that have added you, how can you help them? See other AR members as people who share the same needs, concerns, and challenges you do in today’s market. How can we help each other? Lets dare to make a difference in this network, be a part of the solution, and help those who have made it their decision to get through these times with success. All the good things in life as well as the bad, shall eventually come to pass! It’s how we work through these times “together” that will really make the difference!!

TIP: At the end of the day, people may forget your name, they may even forget what you’ve said, but they will NEVER forget how you made them feel!! Be sure to Live, Laugh and Love, because life is precious but short! Have no regrets!! 🙂 Just get on your feet, Get up and make it happen!!

Blogging From Your Cell Phone?

Today a client asked me, “Why should I Blog? Why wouldn’t I just use email or talk on the phone?” This was a great question, and momentarily had me stumped! “I wish I could just use my phone to Blog?” I asked, “Why wouldn’t you want to expose your marketing and advertising efforts for free using a Blog? She responded, “Because I don’t have time, I’m not a writer, and Blogging requires both!”

I have to say, these are valid concerns for someone who is considering starting a Blog. Then she commented, “If I could just speak into a microphone or something like that, I might consider it. If I could use my phone to Blog, that would be even better.” I started looking for a solution on how to to create a “Voice Activated Blog!” Taking into consideration the cost/expense of creating such a thing, I did some research and here’s what I found.

It’s a company with a widget that allows you to use your phone to Blog. The widget is then placed on your Blog for others to hear, and they can comment or reply via their phone. I thought this was pretty cool, and wanted to share it on my Blog tonight. It’s called Utterz. It’s simple to sign up and begin using your cell phone or land line to Blog! IT’s FREE!

Here’s how it works: Just call 712-432-Mooo(6666) and record your topic, record an idea for a post, explain your world view, or just post what’s on your mind. You can also send video, pictures and text to go@utterz.com, and they’ll post it for you!! It adds a whole new meaning to “finding your voice” for a Blog! Here’s another member’s phone Blog regarding a woman who was fined $222,000.00 for “Stealing” some Music (24 Songs) from KaZaa

MY SAMPLE UTTER!!

“Click for more” on this Widget! Just look what all you can do!

I have uploaded a photo, a video, a text message, a voice reply from my phone, and a written comment! Too Cool!!!

Where does Blogging go from here? Where will technology take us and our Blogs in the days ahead? There are already tech-tools in place that will allow Video Blogging and now Voice Recorded Blogging? There is even a social networking community now called “Second Life” which is a virtual webspace with Life-Like Avatars! it’s crazy, they’re even selling lots and land in the cyber worlds. That’s a whole different topic and post. (coming soon…) Check out Utterz, it’s utterly a new way to Blog from your cell phone!

It's "YOUR" Attitude

YOUR Attitude and mindset mean everything.  This is out of the ordinary for me to share a post like this, but I feel it is warranted.  If it helps just one person who reads it today, then the mission is accomplished!  One of my clients shared this with me today and I want to share it with you…..Our Attitude can really determine our Altitude in life and in business.

John is the kind of guy you love to hate.  He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.  When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”  He was a natural motivator.  If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, “I don’t get it!  You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?”  He replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or … you can choose to be in a bad mood I choose to be in a good mood.”

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or…I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.  Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or… I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.  “Yeah, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested.  “Yes, it is,” he said. “Life is all about choices.  When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.  You choose how you react to situations.  You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live your life.”  I reflected on what he said.  Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business.  We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.  Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.  I saw him about six months after the accident.  When I asked him how he was, he replied, “If I were any better, I’d be twins…Wanna see my scars?” I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

“The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,” he replied.  “Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or…I could choose to die. I chose to live.”  “Weren’t you scared?  Did you lose consciousness?”  I asked.  He continued, “the paramedics were great.  They kept telling me I was going to be fine.  But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.

In their eyes, I read “he’s a dead man” I knew I needed to take action.”  “What did you do?” I asked.  “Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,” said John. “She asked if I was allergic to anything ‘Yes, I replied!’  The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, “Gravity.”  Over their laughter, I told them, “I am choosing to live.  Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.”  He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude… I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34.  After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

New GOOGLE Tools for Your BLOG – Customized Mapping

When I think of the old traditional maps, I still think of the ones in my glove compartment.  You know the one, you unfold it six times to open it, stretch your arms across the entire front seat of the car to read it, and then you’re never able to fold it back up the right way to get it back in the glove compartment again. LOL!  I use to get those maps from AAA before going on road trips with my family, just 2 years ago.

Today, there’s GPS, Google Earth, Mapquest, Mapopolis, Yahoo maps, TREO’s and other options to finding our way around the planet.  So clean out your glove compartments! 🙂  In my research to find a marketing tool for a client today, I discovered a Blog that talked about customizing Google Maps!  It’s the Google Lat Long Blog.
